Off to the beach
Going on a beach vacation was not a hugely popular activity prior to the twentieth century.
The reason for this is that people did not really see much of a need for going to the beach. Then, in the very early part of the twentieth century, the east coast of the United States was hit with a heat wave that the nation had never previously experienced. Air conditioning was not an option. In fact, the refrigerator had not even been invented yet. As such, people looked for alternative ways to cool off.
Since swimming pools were not accessible and lakes virtually non-existent in urban areas, people headed toward the shores of the east coast beaches. Perhaps they were trying to copy the beach culture of the west coast that had already begun to a certain extent by that point in history. Regardless of the manner in which they discovered it, this was the manner in which most people were introduced to the concept of the beach vacation.
The Growth Of The Beach Vacation Industry
The growth of the beach vacation industry magnified throughout the twentieth century until it became a permanent part of the cultural landscape of the United States. With an abundance of swimming, sunning and relaxing there is something for everyone in the family on a beach vacation. And what is a honeymoon if not a tropical beach hideaway? Despite the multitude of changing entertainment tastes, beach vacations remain as wildly popular as ever. There is good reason for this: they are a tremendous amount of fun.
